I took my Galileo thermometer on a plane (checked luggage). Why don't the glass balls float anymore?

The thermometer was on it's side in the baggage area under the plane but as far as I can tell, it isn't leaking and the glass doesn't look cracked. Is this permanently broken? Is there anything we can do to fix it? It means a lot to my husband and I really hate that it doesn't work anymore.
